If you want to know how to grow garlic at home for beginners. I’m going to show you how in some simple steps.
Garlic’s pungent aroma and flavorful taste has made it a household staple.
When grown organically at home, garlic can provide you with more nutrition and even taste.
There are a few ways to grow garlic that you can try almost anywhere!
Best Time To Grow Garlic
It’s best to start growing garlic before the first hard frost, late September is ideal.
Growing garlic in the fall is best, but as long as the ground isn’t frozen(spring time is good too) you can see good results.
How To Grow Garlic At Home In Pots
Want to grow garlic but don’t have a lot of outdoor space?
Using pots for growing garlic is easy and more controllable than sowing in the ground.
Here’s how to grow garlic in pots!
Purchase Bulbs
First, you’ll want to find garlic bulbs from a reputable source.
It’s best to use bulbs that are large and firm.
Break Apart Cloves
Gently pull apart the cloves, leaving the papery layer on, of your garlic bulb and place them in a bowl or tray for planting.
Purchase Pot & Soil
Having a 6-inch growing pot is ideal, but the more cloves you have the more space you’ll need.
Use well-drained organic loam soil with compost mixed in.
Try visiting your local farm for the best options. Garlic prefers soil with a pH of 6-7.
Plant Cloves
With their pointed end facing the sky, plant your garlic cloves in soil 2 inches deep and 4 inches apart.
Water Enough
Garlic grows best in consistently moist soil.
Check the soil for hydration with your finger regularly. Place the plant in direct sunlight, at least 6 hours per day.
It can grow in partial shade but more sunlight is better for growth.
Fertilize
After a few weeks, the garlic will start to sprout shoots above the soil. Once shoots reach 6 inches, add liquid fertilizer to boost growth.
Harvest
When the leaves turn yellow and start to dry, that’s when you’re ready to harvest!
Harvesting garlic will take 7-8 months.
Dig the garlic up with a garden fork and allow them to dry in a warm place for several weeks.
Growing garlic in pots may take more time, but the results are equally rewarding!
How To Grow Garlic In Water
Optionally, garlic can be grown in a jar using only water.
First, fill a glass jar with water and plant while leaving a small gap near the opening.
Grab your garlic bulb(check for molding) and place in the jar, pointed end facing upward.
Change the water every 2-3 days, keeping the bulb in direct sunlight for at least 6 hours. You may need to transfer the garlic to a larger jar once the roots grow longer.
Growing garlic in water may result in smaller cloves, but you can transplant the bulb to soil after roots have sprouted a few inches.
