how to get rid of groundhogs under your shed

If you want to know how to get rid of groundhogs under your shed, it’s best to know a variety of solutions.

Given that we run an urban farm, groundhogs are one of our biggest enemies and have eaten lots of our crops.

The deep holes that these animals make can cause costly damage to your farm, which is why knowing how to deal with them is essential.

Although slaying groundhogs is a simple method, it’s not the easiest choice for more-empathetic farmers.

In this post, I’m going to give you eight tips to get rid of groundhogs under your shed so that they won’t come back!

How To Get Rid Of Groundhogs Under Shed

1. Set A Trap

A common method for getting rid of groundhogs from under sheds would be to set up traps.

This doesn’t have to be a deadly trap, but simply baiting the groundhog to enter a cage with some food can help you transport them to a different area.

Here are some common foods that attract groundhogs…

  • Strawberries
  • Peaches
  • Corn
  • Melon
  • Lettuce

It’s important to wear gloves so that your scent won’t get recognized by the hogs.

When groundhogs smell the human scent, they’re immediately deterred which will ruin the trap!

Once the groundhog has been caught in the cage, set him/her free in a forested area at least ten miles away. Releasing them any closer could result in another occurrence, so be sure to take them as far away as possible.

2. Use Chemicals

Certain chemicals like ammonia are particularly useful for getting rid of groundhogs from under your shed.

Strong scented chemicals are enough to ward off groundhogs and prevent them from returning.

Try pouring some vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or other solution around your shed.

3. Get Guard Dogs

Having a guard dog to watch over your crops can keep groundhogs from digging more holes around your shed.

If getting a watchdog isn’t an option, try acquiring some shedded dog hairs to place around your shed. The scent of dog hair interferes with the groundhog’s senses, signaling danger is nearby.

You can also use some of your own hair sheddings to scare away groundhogs as well, but dog hair is more effective.

4. Get Groundhog Repellent

Besides classical methods for getting rid of groundhogs, there’s also the option to use ultrasonic repellents to keep them away.

The following repellent by the Careland store is made with solar-powered ultrasonic technology that sends waves through the ground in circular motions.

5. Make Noise

Despite their aggressive nature, groundhogs aren’t a fan of vibrations and noise.

Installing a noise-making device/alarm, such as a giant windchime, can help keep groundhogs from digging holes.

6. Talcum Powder

This tactic plays off of the odor-repellent method but is a less abrasive option for sensitive farmers.

Talcum powder stops groundhogs in their tracks gently but effectively.

7. Crushed Pepper And garlic

Do you sneeze when you smell pepper or wiggle your nose inhaling garlic?

The powerful scent of these foods are enough to stop groundhogs dead in their tracks.

8. Use Agricultural Lime

Made from pulverized limestone and chalk, this mixture is used to balance the PH levels in the soil.

Because agricultural lime is caustic, meaning it can cause mild burns, be careful not to touch additives.
